Choosing between two smart telescopes is rarely decided by the spec sheet: field of view, equatorial mode and what is actually in the box are what settle it. Every comparison below picks a winner, criterion by criterion, from data verified against manufacturers and published reviews.

How we compare

The figures in our tables come from our database, built from manufacturer sheets, European and US retailers, and published reviews. When a value is not confirmed by the manufacturer we say so rather than assert it — that is the case for the sensor in the Unistellar Odyssey and for the Dwarf Mini’s field of view.

When a model has not yet been independently reviewed — the Vespera III and the Vespera Pro 2, both released in April 2026 — we compare on specifications and flag it, rather than crediting them with qualities nobody has measured.

The criteria that actually decide

Field of view

The most underrated spec. A Unistellar Odyssey covers 0.56° × 0.75°; a Dwarf 3 covers 2.93° × 1.65°. One will never frame the Andromeda Galaxy in a single shot, the other swallows it whole. No amount of software fixes that.

Equatorial mode

It sets how long a single sub-exposure can run. ZWO offers it but through the TH10 head sold separately; DwarfLab’s Dwarf Mini includes it out of the box, up to 90 seconds. Budget for it before comparing sticker prices.

What is in the box

A Seestar ships with its carbon tripod and solar filter; a Dwarf 3 or Dwarf Mini ships bare. A Vespera II at $1,590 has no built-in filter at all, and the options run from 179 € to 399 €. The sticker price is not the price you pay.

Subscriptions

None of the fifteen models in our database requires a subscription, Unistellar included. It is a stubborn myth that wrongly rules out perfectly self-contained instruments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best smart telescope for beginners?

The Seestar S30 at $399 remains the benchmark: carbon tripod, solar filter and dual-band filter included, nothing to set up. The Dwarf Mini at $419 is lighter but ships without a tripod.

Should I prioritise aperture or field of view?

It depends on your targets. Aperture decides what you can reach on faint objects; field decides what you can frame. For large nebulae, field wins; for compact galaxies and globular clusters, aperture and focal length win.

Can a smart telescope photograph the planets?

Not really. Focal lengths in this category run from 150 to 450 mm, far short of what detailed planetary imaging demands. Every published review agrees on this, including for models above $4,000.

Do smart telescopes work from a city?

Yes, on emission nebulae, thanks to the built-in Hα/OIII dual-band filters on ZWO and DwarfLab models. Galaxies stay difficult under heavy light pollution whatever the model.

How long before I get a usable image?

Expect 30 to 60 minutes of stacking on a bright target, 2 to 3 hours on a faint one. Multi-night modes let you accumulate those exposures across several sessions.
