1. ZWO Seestar S30 — the best first instrument
The S30 aims exactly where a beginner needs it. It is an apochromatic triplet refractor of 30 mm at 150 mm of focal length working at f/5, on a Sony IMX662 Starvis 2 sensor and a motorised alt-azimuth mount, giving 2.1 MP over a wide 1.20° × 2.13° field. You set it down, choose a target in the app and an hour later you have a usable nebula image. No polar alignment, no collimation, no manual focusing, and 6 h of battery so a first session never ends early.
It is also complete. The carbon-fibre tripod, the solar filter, the UV/IR-cut, the Hα/OIII dual band and the dark frame all come in the box, and there is no subscription. The wide field is a beginner virtue in itself: pointing errors matter less and large objects fit in one frame. Be clear about the ceiling — 30 mm collects little light, faint galaxies need long stacking, 2.1 MP leaves no cropping headroom, and planets are out of reach. 2. ZWO Seestar S50 — the beginner who already knows what they want to shoot
If you have already decided that globular clusters and small planetary nebulae interest you more than wide nebula fields, the S50 at $499 gives 50 mm of aperture and 250 mm of focal length at f/5, the finest sampling under $500. The app, the setup routine and the accessory package are identical to the S30’s, so nothing about it is harder to use.
Two things make it the second recommendation rather than the first. Its 0.73° × 1.29° field is unforgiving for a beginner and too tight for M31, so mosaics become routine, and availability is tight, with the model regularly out of stock on the official site. 3. ZWO Seestar S30 Pro — the beginner who will process files
The S30 Pro is the same easy experience with a much better file: a quadruplet apochromatic refractor of 30 mm at 160 mm and f/5.3, on a Sony IMX585 giving 8.3 MP over 2.24° × 3.99°, plus a wide-angle channel and 8K mosaic stitching. Tripod and filters are included exactly as on the S30, and there is no subscription.
At $699 (749 €) it is a lot to spend on a first instrument, and it buys definition rather than light grasp — the aperture is still 30 mm, so faint compact galaxies stay out of reach. Its light-pollution filtering is also less effective than the S50’s, and equatorial mode depends on the optional TH10 head. 4. Vaonis Hestia — the cheapest honest introduction
At 229 €, the Hestia is not a telescope in the same sense: six lenses in three groups with a prism, 30 mm of aperture at 25×, no sensor, no battery, no electronics. Your phone clips on top and does the capturing. It weighs 850 g, and for a family that wants to look at the Moon, and at the Sun with the right pack, it is a genuinely cheap way in.
It is a beginner instrument only for solar-system viewing. There is no tracking, so deep-sky stacking is not on the table, focusing is hit-or-miss and the slider is not very effective, solar images come out veiled and low in contrast, and your phone is immobilised throughout. 5. DwarfLab Dwarf 3 — the beginner who plans to keep going
At $549 the Dwarf 3 gives 8.3 MP over 2.93° × 1.65° from a 35 mm apochromatic channel at f/4.3, three switchable internal filters including an Hα/OIII dual band, 128 GB of storage and IP54 sealing. As a first instrument that will still satisfy you in two years, it is the strongest technical argument on this page.
It asks more of a beginner than the Seestars do. No tripod is supplied, and equatorial mode with its 60 s exposures needs a second, equatorial tripod on top of that, so the shopping list does not end at checkout. Real battery life is nearer 4 h than the 5.5 h claimed. If you are comfortable assembling a kit rather than opening a box, this is the better long-term buy.

The S30’s 1.20° × 2.13° and the Dwarf 3’s 2.93° × 1.65° frame large nebulae in one pointing and tolerate imprecise target choices. A 0.73° × 1.29° field does neither. Early on, the ability to get something recognisable on the screen matters more than sampling a small galaxy well.
Know what you will outgrow
Two limits are structural at this level and no firmware update removes them. Thirty to fifty millimetres of aperture means faint galaxies demand a lot of accumulated exposure, and short focal lengths mean planets stay small blobs.
