1. ZWO Seestar S50 — the closest any of these gets

With 50 mm of aperture and 250 mm of focal length at f/5, the S50 is better than its smaller siblings without being a planetary instrument. It will show Saturn’s rings and the Galilean moons of Jupiter, and Jupiter’s own belts sit right at the threshold of visibility. That is the honest ceiling: you are recording evidence that a feature exists rather than producing a detailed planetary image.

Everything else about it is aimed elsewhere. The 2.1 MP sensor in vertical format and the 0.73° × 1.29° field are deep-sky specifications, and field rotation caps exposures at 30 s without equatorial mode, which needs an equatorial tripod or dedicated head. 2. Unistellar eQuinox 2 — the most focal length, and still a disappointment

At 450 mm of focal length from a 114 mm Newtonian at f/4, the eQuinox 2 has more reach than anything else in the category, and it is still the device’s acknowledged weak point. A 450 mm f/4 optic is optimised for light collection on faint objects, not for finely sampling a planetary disc, and the tests conducted on Mars come out unconvincing. The app’s planetary mode does not compensate for that physical limit.

3. Unistellar eVscope 2 — the same limit, with an eyepiece

The eVscope 2 uses identical 114 mm f/4 optics at 450 mm, with a 7.7 MP sensor and a Nikon micro-OLED eyepiece. On planets, the eyepiece changes the experience without changing the physics: the disc is still under-sampled at this focal length, and no autofocus makes fine focusing slow and manual, with the tube moving when you touch the ring.

At $4,999 (4,699 €) it is the most expensive way to be disappointed by Jupiter in this ranking. Image quality is modest for the money even on the deep-sky targets it was designed for, raw file access has historically been slow through the manufacturer’s servers, and there is no carrying handle on 9 kg of instrument.

4. Celestron Origin Mark II — most aperture, least suited

The Origin Mark II has 152 mm of aperture, far more than anything else here, and it is still poor on planets — consistently so, and for a reason that is built into the design. A 335 mm astrograph at f/2.2 is optimised for flux, not for sampling a disc a few arcseconds across, and 2 µm photosites do not compensate for such a short focal length. Reviews flag planetary performance as a clear weak point.

This is the clearest illustration of the whole page: aperture alone does not make a planetary telescope. The Origin is the best instrument in this category for astrophotography, and among the worst for the Solar System’s planets, because the two jobs want opposite optical geometry.

5. ZWO Seestar S30 — the Moon and the Sun done properly

If your interest in the Solar System is the Moon and the Sun rather than the planets, the picture changes completely. The S30 at $399 includes a solar filter in the box alongside its UV/IR-cut, Hα/OIII dual band and dark frame, and its 1.20° × 2.13° field at 150 mm frames the full lunar disc comfortably. Sessions are short, easy and repeatable, which is exactly what makes it our pick for beginners.

On the planets themselves it is the weakest instrument here: at 150 mm of focal length Jupiter and Saturn stay small blobs, and this is the model’s clearest stated limitation. The S30 Pro at $699 adds definition but no focal length worth speaking of, so it changes nothing on this page.

What matters in this category

Focal length, not aperture, sets planetary detail

A planet is a small, bright disc a few tens of arcseconds across. Resolving detail on it requires a long focal length so that the disc covers many pixels. These instruments do the opposite deliberately: short focal lengths and fast aperture ratios maximise the light gathered from large faint objects. The Origin’s 152 mm at f/2.2 is the extreme case — the most aperture in the category and among the worst planetary results.

What smart telescopes genuinely do in the Solar System

The Moon works well: it is large, bright and forgiving, and a 1° to 4° field frames it easily. The Sun works too, with the supplied filters on the ZWO and DwarfLab models, or the Vaonis Hestia packs from 259 €. Jupiter’s moons and Saturn’s rings register as recognisable features from 250 mm upwards. Beyond that, expect nothing.
