$4,999 in the US, 4,699 € in Europe: the eVscope 2 is the only Unistellar to carry a micro-OLED eyepiece signed by Nikon. It is also the most expensive in the range for optics strictly identical to those of the eQuinox 2, which sells for $2,100 less.

The short verdict

Announced on 14 September 2021, the eVscope 2 is a 114 mm Newtonian at f/4 for 450 mm of focal length, with a 7.7 MP Sony IMX347 sensor, an alt-azimuth GoTo mount, 64 GB of storage and 9 kg on the scales (7 kg of tube, 2 kg of tripod). Its real signature is the Nikon micro-OLED eyepiece, the first in the range: you put your eye to it and see the processed image live. The widened 0.57° × 0.76° field lets the whole Moon sit inside the frame, which the original eVscope could not manage. Enhanced Vision stacks exposures roughly every four seconds and proves very effective on deep sky. No subscription: the iOS and Android app is free and all functions are included.

The problem lies elsewhere. At $4,999, image quality remains modest given the price, and the absence of autofocus imposes a slow manual routine during which touching the focus ring moves the tube. Access to RAW files was painful for a long time, with a mandatory detour through Unistellar’s servers and customer support and delays reaching a week, which one tester summed up as a major missed opportunity. If the eyepiece is not indispensable to you, the Unistellar eQuinox 2 delivers exactly the same images for $2,899. If you want the OLED eyepiece in a lighter package, the Unistellar Odyssey Pro at $4,599 is worth the detour.

The eVscope 2 is right for you if…

What it is really worth in the field

Deep sky

This is where the eVscope 2 convinces. Enhanced Vision accumulates exposures roughly every four seconds and the rise in signal is visible live, on the tablet as much as in the eyepiece: a galaxy invisible in the first frame draws itself in over a few minutes. The 7.7 MP IMX347 sensor and the 114 mm at f/4 give clean framing on compact objects, within a 0.57° × 0.76° field that stays narrow for large structures. All of it with no polar alignment. That said, the rendering, while respectable, does not distinguish itself from that of the eQuinox 2, which costs roughly half as much.

Moon and Sun

The widened field of the version 2 fits the whole Moon in the frame, something the original eVscope could not do: a clear gain for public outreach, where you want to show the complete disc rather than a fragment. With 450 mm of focal length the scale stays modest: close-ups of craters are not what this device is for. For the Sun, no filtration device is supplied, and the rule is absolute — without a certified solar filter ahead of the optics, you never point at the Sun.

Planets

Do not expect a miracle. A 450 mm Newtonian at f/4 collects light on faint, extended objects; it does not finely sample a planetary disc. The optics are identical to those of the eQuinox 2, whose planetary mode comes out disappointing in testing, notably on Mars: no reason to hope for better here. The OLED eyepiece makes the exercise more pleasant in a group, but it does not create detail the optics never produced.

The OLED eyepiece and group use: the real reason to buy

Between the eVscope 2 and the eQuinox 2, the $2,100 difference buys the eyepiece and collective use. The Nikon micro-OLED restores direct observation, eye against instrument, which screen sharing does not replace. Add ten users connected at the same time and you get a formidable outreach tool: one person looks into the eyepiece while the other nine follow the same target on their phones. Astronomy club, science mediation, a family evening: that is the scenario that justifies the premium.

The Odyssey Pro, at $4,599, also offers an OLED eyepiece in a lighter format, but with 85 mm of aperture against 114 mm. The eVscope 2 keeps the advantage in light collection, decisive on deep sky. The Odyssey Pro is the eVscope 2 for people who walk; the eVscope 2 remains the one for people who want aperture.

eVscope 2 vs Celestron Origin Mark II

The Celestron Origin Mark II, at $4,299, lines up a 152 mm RASA at f/2.2: far more aperture and speed, but 18.87 kg against 9 kg and no eyepiece at all. For a US buyer the comparison stings, because the Origin Mark II is also $700 cheaper — European buyers face the reverse, since it lists at 5,299 € there against 4,699 € for the eVscope 2. The Origin Mark II wins on the optical spec sheet, the eVscope 2 wins the moment you have to carry the instrument or let someone look inside it.

Can you retrieve RAW files easily?

Historically no, and it is the harshest criticism levelled at the device: the procedure went through Unistellar’s servers and a request to support, with delays that could reach a week. It was free, but slow. If processing your own images matters, check the state of that function in the current version of the app before buying.

Is there an autofocus?

No, focusing is entirely manual and slow. More awkwardly, touching the ring moves the tube, which forces you to wait for it to settle before judging the result.
