The DwarfLab Dwarf Mini is the lightest smart telescope on the market: 840 g for 101 × 61 × 184 mm, a six-element 30 mm apochromatic telephoto and a Sony IMX662 Starvis 2 sensor, at an official $419 (roughly 409 to 495 € depending on the retailer). That portability is paid for in resolution: only 2.1 MP, which rules out any serious cropping.

The verdict in three lines

Do not confuse it with the Dwarf II of 2023: the Mini is a new and separate model, on preorder since November 2025 for deliveries around March 2026. It is aimed at the person who travels and refuses to give up astrophotography: at 840 g, it goes into carry-on luggage with no negotiation. Technically it does two things well: its EQ mode allows exposures up to 90 s with no paid accessory, and its 2.9 µm photosites, larger than the 2 µm of the Dwarf 3, deliver a slightly less noisy image at equal exposure. Automatic processing also removes satellite trails and clouds, and Stellar Studio is included in the app, with no subscription.

What it does not do is produce files usable at large sizes. With 1,920 × 1,080 pixels, that is 2.1 MP, the cropping headroom is nil. Battery life falls to about 2 h in real stacking despite the ~4 h claimed, storage tops out at 64 GB (about 53 GB usable), the tripod is not supplied and the device carries no IP rating. If you want resolution, go to the Dwarf 3 and its 8.3 MP. If you want a complete package on a tight budget, the Seestar S30 at $399 (399 € in Europe) arrives with its carbon tripod.

Buy the Dwarf Mini if…

  • You travel with your gear. 840 g and 101 × 61 × 184 mm, against 1.3 kg for the Dwarf 3: it is the most portable on the market, carry-on compatible without argument.
  • You want EQ mode at no extra cost. Exposures go up to 90 s with no paid accessory, where the Seestar S30 charges for that function and the Dwarf 3 tops out at 60 s with a mandatory equatorial tripod.
  • You prefer a clean image to a big one. The 2.9 µm photosites of the IMX662 collect more light than the 2 µm of the Dwarf 3, hence a slightly less noisy result at equal exposure.
  • You do not want to process your images. Automatic processing removes satellite trails and clouds, and Stellar Studio is built into the app.
  • You target extended objects. The field, estimated at around 2.13° × 1.20° from optical calculation — a value not confirmed by an official spec sheet — is still wide.

Skip it if…

  • You want to crop or print large. 2.1 MP (1,920 × 1,080) is four times less than the 8.3 MP of the Dwarf 3: the cropping headroom is almost nil.
  • You observe through whole nights. The 7,000 mAh battery, rated for about 4 h, lasts roughly 2 h in real stacking, and the 64 GB of storage is half the Dwarf 3’s.
  • You leave the device outside unattended. No IP rating at all, unlike the Dwarf 3’s IP54: damp and dust remain a risk.
  • You want a complete package on delivery. The tripod is not supplied, which brings the real budget closer to that of the Seestar S30, delivered with its own.

How it actually performs in the field

Deep sky

This is where it convinces most, provided you accept the resolution. At f/5, with 2.9 µm photosites on a 1/2.8″ IMX662 Starvis 2, it gives a clean signal on short exposures, and the 90 s EQ mode changes the picture on faint targets. Mosaic mode widens the framing beyond the native field. The Hα/OIII dual-band targets emission nebulae, the Astro 430-690 nm filter targets galaxies, and the dark frame automates thermal-noise subtraction. The limit is still the output file: what you gain in signal, you will not be able to enlarge.

Moon and Sun

A magnetic ND solar filter is supplied: the Sun in white light is accessible straight out of the box. The 150 mm focal length on a 1/2.8″ sensor gives a full-frame equivalent of 1,016 mm, so tighter framing than the Dwarf 3’s 737 mm, but with only 2.1 MP to fill it. You get a well-sized Moon in the frame: this is the best use of the resolution available.

Planets

This is not a planetary instrument. An aperture of 30 mm and a focal length of 150 mm cannot resolve Jupiter’s belts or Saturn’s rings, and the flattering framing of the 1,016 mm equivalent compensates for neither the optical resolution nor the 2.1 MP. The Seestar S50, with 50 mm of aperture and 250 mm of focal length, remains more relevant on this ground.

Travel and bulk

This is its main argument, and it is a real one. 840 g and 101 × 61 × 184 mm fit in a backpack next to a camera, where the 1.3 kg of the Dwarf 3 already forces a trade-off. The alt-az GoTo mount rotates through 360° with no hard stop, which avoids re-alignments mid-session. The 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi reaches about 15 m, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC speed up pairing, and charging is over USB-C, so from a power bank. All that is missing is a tripod, to be chosen as light as the instrument.

The Mini answers with 840 g against 1.3 kg, 2.9 µm photosites against 2 µm and a 90 s EQ mode against 60 s. The Mini is the better second device; the Dwarf 3 is the only one of the two that produces images you keep at large sizes.

Dwarf Mini vs Vaonis Hestia

The Vaonis Hestia costs $229 (229 € in Europe) but is not a standalone telescope: it is an unmotorised optical module that uses your smartphone. No tracking, therefore no long exposures and no automated stacking. The Mini, motorised and fitted with alt-az GoTo, plays in another category. The Hestia is an entry-level instrument, the Mini a genuine travel astrophotography device.
