The Seestar S30 Pro is a dual-optic smart telescope selling for $699 (749 € in Europe), able to shoot the sky in 4K across two simultaneous fields. The catch is that a 30 mm aperture does not change physics: it gathers about as much light as a finderscope, with a very good sensor sitting behind it.
The verdict in three lines
The S30 Pro targets the beginner or intermediate astrophotographer who wants wide, clean, usable images without knowing anything about polar alignment, guiding or stacking. Its two channels — 160 mm at f/5.3 for deep sky, 6 mm at f/1.75 for a 63° field — both record in 4K (8.3 MP, 2160 × 3840) on Sony IMX585 and IMX586 sensors. The telephoto channel frames 2.24° × 3.99°, a 4.6° diagonal: enough to hold large nebulae and open clusters in a single frame, with enough pixels left over to crop afterwards. That is where it genuinely wins, and the sensor’s active area, roughly four times that of the S30, shows up immediately in star tightness and cropping latitude.
What it does not do is dig deep. Thirty millimetres of aperture is still thirty millimetres, and genuinely faint targets demand long sessions for a result that plateaus. Its light-pollution filter is also less aggressive than the S50’s dual-band, which penalises emission nebulae under city skies. If you want detail rather than field, the Seestar S50 and its 250 mm sample small objects far better. And if the wide-field idea appeals but the price does not, the Seestar S30 at $399 (399 € in Europe) offers the same aperture with only a 2.1 MP sensor.
Buy the Seestar S30 Pro if…
- You mostly shoot extended objects. A 2.24° × 3.99° field leaves composition headroom where the S50 (0.73° × 1.29°) forces you into mosaics.
- You want resolution. 8.3 MP in 4K on both channels, where the S30 stops at 2.1 MP: cropping and printing become genuinely possible.
- You travel light. 1.65 kg, carbon tripod included, 6 h of imaging battery and 128 GB of internal storage: a full night with no logistics.
- You want to automate. ASCOM Alpaca support, on top of 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, opens the door to sequences driven from a PC.
- You observe in damp conditions. Dew resistance is built in, with no external heater strip or extra battery to manage.
Skip it if…
- Your favourite targets are small and faint. At 160 mm of focal length and 30 mm of aperture, compact galaxies will stay blobs no matter how much integration time you stack.
- You observe from a city centre. The S30 Pro’s light-pollution filter is less selective than the S50’s OIII 30 nm / Hα 20 nm dual-band, and it shows in the sky background.
- You are counting on equatorial mode. It exists, but it goes through the optional TH10 head: the real price then climbs past $699.
- You refuse to depend on an app. Everything runs through ZWO’s software, from framing to export: there is no standalone fallback mode.
How it actually performs in the field
Deep sky
This is its playground, provided you pick large, bright targets. The f/5.3 ratio on the telephoto channel stays fast, and the IMX585 handles stacked short exposures well. Emission nebulae benefit from the OIII 30 nm / Hα 20 nm dual-band, the automated mosaic function assembles up to 8K to cover whole regions, and the Milky Way mode puts the wide-angle channel to work. On faint objects, though, you hit a ceiling quickly: the signal is not there, and no processing invents it.
Moon and Sun
The magnetic solar filter is supplied, which makes daytime observing immediate and safe as long as you check its attachment before every session. On the Moon, 160 mm of focal length gives a full disc comfortably contained in the field, rendered sharply thanks to the 8.3 MP: this is a good instrument for tracking an eclipse or lunar phases, not one for high-magnification lunar relief.
Planets
Rule this out from the start. With 30 mm of aperture and 160 mm of focal length, Jupiter and Saturn show up as small discs: you can identify the rings, guess at the belts, and resolve no detail. Video mode (4 h of battery) lets you capture sequences, but the sampling caps out. No smart telescope in this category does better; you have to change instrument families.
Dual channel, mosaics and wide angle
This is the genuinely differentiating argument. The 3.4 mm f/1.75 wide-angle channel covers 63° and also records in 4K: conjunctions, aurorae, Milky Way panoramas and landscape framing all happen without a second camera. Two 4K channels at this price did not exist before it. Combined with automated mosaicking and 8K assembly, this architecture turns the S30 Pro into a wide-field tool rather than a miniature telescope — and that is how it should be judged.

The Dwarf 3 at $549 (549 € in Europe) shows 35 mm of aperture and an 8.3 MP IMX678, so equivalent resolution for $200 less, but a 2.93° × 1.65° field that is narrower in one axis, and above all no tripod supplied. The S30 Pro answers with its second 4K channel, its 8K mosaics, its carbon tripod and its dew heater. The Dwarf 3 wins on price per millimetre of aperture; the S30 Pro wins as soon as you look at the whole package delivered.

The S50 at $499 (499 € in Europe) sets 50 mm of aperture and 250 mm of focal length against a sensor of only 2.1 MP, with a 0.73° × 1.29° field. It samples small objects better and filters light pollution more aggressively; it loses on field, resolution and weight (2.5 kg against 1.65 kg). Small objects and urban skies: S50. Can you take long exposures with the Seestar S30 Pro?
