It takes the exact optics of the eVscope 2 and removes the eyepiece, which means accepting that you observe only on a smartphone or tablet screen.

The short verdict

The eQuinox 2 is a 114 mm Newtonian reflector at f/4, for 450 mm of focal length, paired with a 6.2 MP Sony IMX347 colour sensor. That yields a limiting magnitude of 18.2 under a dark sky and around 16 in an urban zone: enough to pull out galaxies where a classical visual instrument would show nothing but grey background. Autonomous Field Detection aligns the instrument in a few seconds, with no polar alignment, and that is the point the press picks up most readily — the BBC awards it 4.5/5. Add 11 hours of runtime, 64 GB of internal storage, 9 kg all in with the tripod, and above all no subscription: the iOS and Android app is free and every function is included, permanently.

The reservations are real. Images lack a little bite, planetary mode disappoints — tests on Mars are unconvincing — and the faintest nebulae remain affected by light pollution despite the onboard processing. Moon and Sun

With 0.76° across the largest dimension of the field, the entire lunar disc fits in the frame: clean overview shots of the terminator and the great maria. The short 450 mm focal length does limit the scale, though: no detailed close-ups of craters, which is not what this instrument is for. On the solar side, no filtration accessory is supplied and the rule admits no exception — without a certified solar filter placed ahead of the optics, you never point at the Sun.

Planets

This is the device’s acknowledged disappointment. A 450 mm Newtonian at f/4 is optimised for light collection on faint objects, not for finely sampling a planetary disc.
