Unistellar eVscope eQuinox

Discontinued model, vanished datasheet: Unistellar no longer publishes a single specification for the first-generation eVscope eQuinox, released in 2021. Every figure on this page comes from the specialist press and archived dealer listings — none of it comes from the manufacturer. Its defining trait fits in one sentence: it is the eVscope of the same era, stripped of its electronic eyepiece, and therefore far cheaper and screen-only.

This is the most important thing on the page, and it deserves to be read before the numbers. Unistellar has removed all technical documentation for the first-generation eQuinox from its site. There is no active manufacturer page left for this model: the “manufacturer source” field on this page is deliberately empty, and will stay that way.

The specifications listed here were reconstructed from reviews published in the specialist press and from archived dealer listings. They are internally consistent, but they have never been confirmed by Unistellar, and two of them openly contradict each other depending on the source:

  • Focal ratio: f/3.9 or f/4? B&H states f/3.9, Astronomy Now uses f/4. The difference is negligible in practice, but it is real and we are not settling it: this page shows f/4, the more widely repeated value, while noting that f/3.9 circulates just as much.
  • Aperture: 114 mm claimed, 110 mm measured. The 114 mm is the marketing figure inherited from the eVscope. Astronomy Now, measuring the instrument, found 110 mm of usable diameter. Four millimetres less means roughly 7 % less collecting area: undetectable in practice, but worth knowing if you compare datasheets line by line.

Wherever nothing was ever published, this page leaves “Not published” rather than copying an unverifiable value. That applies to the launch price, the filters, the mosaic mode and the mosaic field of view.

The verdict in three lines

The first-generation eQuinox is a 114 mm Newtonian at f/4 with a 450 mm focal length, paired with a 1.2 MP Sony Exmor IMX224 colour sensor. That is exactly the optics and sensor of the eVscope of the same era, with one difference that changes everything: there is no electronic eyepiece. You observe only on a smartphone or tablet, and up to ten devices can connect at once. In exchange, the eQuinox cost markedly less, sat on a twin-fork mount steadier than the eVscope’s single arm, and ran twelve hours on battery instead of nine.

The first-generation eQuinox is for you if…

  • You observe with other people and want everyone to see the same thing at the same moment, on their own screen.
  • You want the cheapest way into the Unistellar ecosystem on the used market, and you will not miss the eyepiece.
  • You run long sessions: twelve claimed hours of battery life is a full night without external power.
  • Deep sky interests you more than the planets.
  • You accept an instrument with no manufacturer documentation, betting on an app that is still maintained.

Avoid it if…

  • You care about putting your eye to an eyepiece: that is precisely what this model removes.
  • You want an official datasheet, clear manufacturer support, a warranty: none of that exists here any more.
  • You are after the planets: 450 mm of focal length and 1.2 MP are not built for that.
  • You are buying new: the model is discontinued, only the used market remains.

What it is really worth in the field

No eyepiece: what that actually changes

This is the heart of the matter. On the 2019 eVscope, a small OLED screen housed in an eyepiece created the illusion of looking “into” the telescope: a convincing bit of staging, much appreciated during demonstrations, but limited to one person at a time. The eQuinox removes that eyepiece and moves all observation into the app, over Wi-Fi.

The change runs deeper than it looks. You no longer lean over the instrument: you look at a screen held in your hand, seated, warm if need be, a few metres from the tube. The image is bigger, easier to read, and above all shared — up to ten devices can connect simultaneously, each following the same acquisition. For a public evening, a classroom or a family, that is far more practical than a queue in front of an eyepiece.

What is lost is a matter of feel: the sensation of direct observation disappears completely. Some see no drawback at all, others consider it the essence of the astronomical experience. That is a personal preference, not a technical fault — but on its own it decides the purchase.

Deep sky

This is the instrument’s home ground. Live image stacking brings out galaxies, nebulae and clusters where a conventional visual telescope of the same aperture would show only a grey smudge. The 1.2 MP IMX224 sensor is modest by current standards, and the 27 × 37 arcmin field is narrow: the larger nebulae do not fit entirely in the frame. No mosaic mode was ever published for this model, and this page does not invent one.

Moon and planets

At 450 mm of focal length, the planets stay small discs. The Moon comes out acceptably, with the usual care over exposure. This is not what the instrument is for, and no review claims otherwise.

Twelve hours of battery, twin fork, 64 GB

Three areas where the eQuinox was better served than the eVscope of the same generation: twelve claimed hours against nine, a twin-fork mount instead of a single arm — so fewer vibrations — and 64 GB of internal storage to keep the acquisitions. The whole thing weighs 9 kg including the tripod: it travels in a car boot, but it is not a backpack instrument.

  • Twin-fork GoTo alt-azimuth mount, steadier than the eVscope’s single arm.

Weaknesses

  • No manufacturer datasheet: everything published comes from third-party sources.
  • Two contradictory values depending on the source: f/3.9 or f/4, 114 mm or 110 mm.
  • No electronic eyepiece: a deal-breaker for anyone attached to direct observation.
  • A 1.2 MP sensor and a narrow field, well behind current standards.
  • Discontinued model: no manufacturer warranty, uncertain parts and support.
  • Launch price, filters and mosaic mode never published: several deliberate gaps on this page.

Against the eVscope of the same generation

Same tube, same sensor, same focal length, same app. Only three differences, and they are enough to decide: the eVscope has an OLED electronic eyepiece, the eQuinox does not; the eVscope runs nine hours on battery, the eQuinox twelve; the eVscope sits on a single arm, the eQuinox on a twin fork. At the time the price gap between the two was substantial, and it came almost entirely down to that eyepiece. On the used market the same logic applies: if you will not miss the eyepiece, the eQuinox delivers the same images for less.

What the eQuinox 2 brings

The successor, the eQuinox 2, keeps the principle — no eyepiece, observation on screen — but changes the sensor: a 6.2 MP Sony IMX347 replaces the 1.2 MP IMX224. The gain in definition is considerable, the field widens to 0.57° × 0.76°, and the software processing has moved on a great deal. The optics do not change: still a 114/450 Newtonian. If you are hesitating between the two on the used market, the price gap is justified by the sensor, not by the tube.

For an eyepiece, you have to look at the eVscope 2, which takes the eQuinox 2 optics and adds an OLED eyepiece.

Buying a used eQuinox: on what conditions

A used unit remains defensible, but on three conditions. First the price: it must be clearly below that of a used eQuinox 2, otherwise the 1.2 MP sensor cannot be justified. Then the state of the battery: it is the part that ages, and twelve hours claimed in 2021 are not twelve hours today — ask for a full night to be demonstrated, or negotiate accordingly. Finally the app: before buying, check that your phone connects to the instrument and drives a complete acquisition, since everything goes through it and no maintenance commitment is published.

Add the usual optical checks — clean mirror, collimation, no play in the fork — and ask for the original tripod, which was supplied with the instrument.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this page say “Not published” so often?

Because Unistellar never published those values, or has withdrawn them. Rather than copying an unverifiable figure from elsewhere, we leave the gap visible. This applies in particular to the launch price, the built-in filters and the mosaic mode.

Does the first-generation eQuinox have an eyepiece?

No, and that is its defining characteristic. Observation happens only on a smartphone or tablet through the Unistellar app, over Wi-Fi. That is what separates it from the eVscope of the same era.

Is a subscription required?

No. The Unistellar app for iOS and Android is free, with no paid tier.

114 mm or 110 mm of aperture?

Both figures circulate: 114 mm is the claimed value, 110 mm the one measured by Astronomy Now. With no manufacturer datasheet, there is no way to settle it. The difference has no practical consequence.

How many people can observe at the same time?

Up to ten devices can connect simultaneously over Wi-Fi, each showing the same acquisition. That is the direct benefit of dropping the eyepiece.
