The original Vaonis Vespera is no longer manufactured or sold: this page is an archive. Unveiled on 1 October 2020, this 50 mm f/4 smart telescope (200 mm focal length) was replaced by the Vespera II, then joined by the Vespera III and the Pro range. Its product page has been removed from the manufacturer’s site; only the manuals page remains online. If you are reading this, you probably own one or are looking at a second-hand unit: everything below is written for those two situations, never for a new purchase.
Verdict in three lines
The instrument remains perfectly usable: the mechanics, the tracking and the Singularity app have not aged. What has aged is the sensor, with only 2 megapixels where the Vespera II offers 8.3. At a contained second-hand price it is an honest entry point into assisted astrophotography; at the price of a used Vespera II there is no longer any reason to prefer it.
This Vespera is right for you if…
- You want a first automated instrument on a small budget and you accept images meant for a screen rather than for print.
- You already own the unit and wonder whether it is worth keeping: yes, as long as it works, because its usefulness far exceeds its resale value.
- You mainly observe large, bright targets, where the f/4 ratio works in your favour.
- You want a complete, portable package: the tripod is included and the stated weight is 5 kg.
Avoid it if…
- You are aiming for tight crops or printing: 2 megapixels forgive no cropping.
- You want to photograph the planets: with a 200 mm focal length and a 1.6° × 0.9° field, they remain tiny discs.
- You need an equatorial mode: this model does not have one.
- You care about standard power supply: the connector is magnetic and proprietary, with no USB-C.
- You want a manufacturer warranty or commercial support: the product is discontinued and its product page deleted.
What it is still worth in the field
Deep sky
This is the instrument’s natural playground. The 50 mm f/4 apochromatic quadruplet gathers light quickly, and large nebulae or open clusters fit easily into a 1.6° × 0.9° field. The limit appears at magnification: the 2-megapixel Sony sensor sets a resolution that is fine for sharing on a screen and much less so for cropping or printing.
Moon and Sun
The Moon fits comfortably in the field and remains an easy target, provided you accept that it occupies only a small part of the frame. For the Sun, our data records no integrated filter and no certified solar filter for this generation: without a manufacturer source, we publish no solar observing procedure for this model.
Planets
It was never built for that. With a 200 mm focal length, Jupiter or Saturn come down to a few dozen pixels. The Vespera II does not change that; no smart telescope in this family is a planetary instrument.
Mosaic and wide fields
The mosaic mode (CovalENS in Vaonis terms) is present and remains the unit’s most interesting argument today. It extends the field to 3.2° × 1.8° for a final image of 8.2 megapixels at most, roughly the native resolution of a Vespera II over a wider field. It is the best way to compensate for the sensor, at the cost of a far longer session.
Strengths
- 50 mm f/4 apochromatic quadruplet optics, faster than the Vespera II’s f/5.
- Complete, self-contained package, tripod included, no subscription: the Singularity app is free.
- Mosaic mode pushing the field to 3.2° × 1.8° and the image to 8.2 megapixels.
- Low second-hand value for a feature set that is still that of a modern smart telescope.
- 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, so no dependence on a congested 2.4 GHz network.
Weaknesses
- 2-megapixel sensor: this is the structural limit of the unit, and only mosaic mode works around it.
- 1.6° × 0.9° field, clearly narrower than the Vespera II’s 2.5° × 1.4°.
- No equatorial mode, hence field rotation on long exposures.
- Proprietary magnetic power connector, no USB-C: losing the original cable is a real problem.
- Discontinued product, deleted product page, internal storage capacity never published by the manufacturer.
Against the Vespera II: what actually changed
Three gaps sum up the succession. The sensor first: 2 megapixels against 8.3 is a ratio of more than four, and it shows the moment you crop. Then the optics: 200 mm at f/4 on the first Vespera, 250 mm at f/5 on the second. The former is faster per unit of area, the latter longer and, above all, better sampled. Finally the field: 1.6° × 0.9° against 2.5° × 1.4°, roughly twice as much sky in one go on the Vespera II.
In other words, the first Vespera is not slower: it is less detailed and sees less sky. On a target that fills its field and at modest display size the gap narrows; as soon as you want detail, it becomes enormous.
At what second-hand price does it become interesting again?
Vaonis never left an accessible public price for this model, so our data sheet publishes neither an indicative price in euros nor a price in dollars. We will not invent one. The buying decision is therefore relative, and it fits in one rule: this Vespera only makes sense at a fraction well below half the price of a used Vespera II in good condition. Above that, the sensor and field gap makes the choice indefensible.
Two things to check before buying, because everything else depends on them: the presence of the original cable and power supply, because of the proprietary magnetic connector, and the real state of the battery, whose wear never shows in a classified ad.
Accessories: what remains compatible
The tripod ships with the unit and remains the simplest solution. The Singularity app is free and subscription-free, and it is what drives the instrument. On the power side, the magnetic connector is not USB-C: a modern power bank cannot be plugged in directly, so the original accessory must be kept.
Our data records no integrated filter, and the manufacturer has kept no compatibility list for this generation. The optional filters sold for recent models are therefore not presented here as compatible: this is an acknowledged gap in this page, to be checked with a dealer before any purchase.
What our sources do not allow us to state
This archive page owns its blind spots rather than filling them in. Three points are worth knowing before buying or selling.
- Battery life. Two Vaonis sources contradict each other: the 2024 manual states about 8 hours, while the 2020 launch blog post announced 4. We keep the manual figure, more recent and consistent with a 7000 mAh (49 Wh) battery, but the gap is real and years of wear will widen it.
- Weight. The stated 5 kg is never qualified: the manufacturer does not say whether it includes the tripod. Treat it as an order of magnitude for transport, not as usable data.
- The sensor. The Sony IMX462 reference comes from the manufacturer’s blog; the manual only mentions a Sony 1/2.8″ CMOS. The 2-megapixel resolution itself is not disputed.
Two further fields were never published by Vaonis and are left empty here: internal storage capacity and price, in euros as well as in dollars. Since the product page has been deleted, our reference link points to the manufacturer’s manuals and documents page, the only source still online.

Is the first-generation Vespera still usable in 2026?
Yes, as long as the electronics and the battery hold up. The manual was updated in 2024 and the Singularity app remains free, which points to a device that is still documented. That said, the product is discontinued, so neither parts availability nor the length of software support is guaranteed.
What is its real battery life?
Count on about 8 hours according to the 2024 manual, but be aware that the launch communication mentioned 4 hours. On a second-hand unit, the only reliable measurement is the one you make yourself over a full night.
Should you prefer a used Vespera II?
In almost every case yes, as soon as the two prices come close. The 8.3-megapixel sensor and the 2.5° × 1.4° field change the nature of the images you get. The first Vespera keeps the advantage on one criterion only: its price, and its f/4 aperture ratio.
Can you do serious astrophotography with 2 megapixels?
You can produce honest images meant for a screen, and mosaic mode allows up to 8.2 megapixels over a wider field. For printing or tight cropping, look elsewhere.
