The first-generation eVscope, released in 2019, has been discontinued for several years — and Unistellar has removed every technical datasheet for it from its website. None of the figures published below therefore comes from the manufacturer: they all come from the specialist press. It is the only Unistellar of its generation with an OLED electronic eyepiece, and that is precisely what separates it from the contemporary eQuinox.

Sourcing warning: these specifications do not come from Unistellar

The point is unusual enough to belong at the top of the page rather than in a footnote. Unistellar no longer publishes any technical documentation on the first-generation eVscope: the product page is gone, no downloadable datasheet remains, and no active manufacturer link can be offered. The “manufacturer source” field of this page is therefore deliberately empty.

Every value in the specifications table — aperture, focal length, focal ratio, sensor, field of view, battery life, weight — comes from reviews and articles published in the specialist press around the time the model was sold. They are consistent with one another, but they have never been reconfirmed by Unistellar since the product was withdrawn. Treat them as reliable orders of magnitude, not as contractual data.

A 2019 114/450 f/4 Newtonian on a motorised single-arm GoTo alt-azimuth mount, whose only genuinely distinctive argument today is its OLED electronic eyepiece: you put your eye to the tube and watch the image build up, which no eQuinox allows. The Sony Exmor IMX224 sensor, on the other hand, shows its age. Worth considering second-hand only, and at a price clearly below that of an eQuinox from the same era.

What it is really worth in the field

The OLED electronic eyepiece: what makes this model singular

This is the heart of the matter. The 2019 eVscope is not simply a telescope that sends its image to a phone: where a conventional focuser would sit, it carries a small OLED screen that you look at with the naked eye through a viewing optic. The displayed image is not a direct view of the sky, it is the live stack of the sensor’s short exposures — the nebula reveals itself progressively while you watch.

What that changes in use is less technical than social. In front of an audience the object remains a telescope: people queue, lean in and look. A tablet screen, by contrast, turns the session into a projection. The difference in perception is real, especially with children or newcomers, and it is why first-generation units still circulate in clubs and outreach associations.

The trade-off fits in one sentence: this eyepiece is a 2019 eyepiece. Its definition and rendering are noticeably behind the micro-OLED eyepiece the eVscope 2 introduced afterwards. Anyone discovering the principle will find it striking; anyone who has already looked into an eVscope 2 will see the gap immediately.

Deep sky

The 114 mm at f/4, with its 450 mm focal length, is built for deep sky: it is the same optical formula Unistellar kept for the eQuinox and then the eVscope 2. The field of roughly 30 arcmin comfortably frames the larger nebulae and clusters; galaxies stay modest but lift off the sky background within tens of seconds of stacking, even from a light-polluted site.

The limit comes from the sensor. The Sony Exmor IMX224 is a small entry-level sensor of its time, and its resolution was never published by Unistellar for this device. In practice the images hold up on screen but tolerate cropping poorly, where the eVscope 2’s IMX347 leaves far more headroom.

Moon and planets

Like every smart telescope in this family, the instrument is built for deep sky rather than for planetary work. At 450 mm of focal length, Jupiter and Saturn remain small identifiable blobs rather than detailed disks. The Moon fares better, but the sensor’s dynamic range and the automatic exposure are no substitute for a dedicated instrument.

Mount, setup and battery life

The mount is a motorised single-arm GoTo alt-azimuth — an immediate visual identifier, since the 2021 eQuinox moved to a double fork. Pointing relies on field recognition and the built-in GPS, with no manual star alignment. A tripod is included.

Reckon on roughly 9 hours of battery life as reported by period reviews, and 9 kg to carry. There is no equatorial mode: field rotation is handled in software, as across the whole range. The link is over Wi-Fi with the Unistellar app on iOS and Android, with no subscription.

On a second-hand unit these are the parts to inspect first: how the battery holds up after several years, any play in the arm, and the correct operation of the eyepiece screen, which is the least replaceable part of the whole assembly.

The eVscope against the other Unistellars

Same 114/450 f/4 optical formula, but two generations of electronics apart. The eVscope 2 moves to a 7.7 MP Sony IMX347 sensor and a far higher-definition micro-OLED eyepiece; it is quoted at a 0.57° × 0.76° field, 64 GB of storage and a comparable 9 hours of battery life. In other words, the eVscope 2 brings exactly what limits the 2019 model: the sensor and the eyepiece. If the electronic eyepiece is your reason for buying and the budget allows, that is where to go.

eVscope vs eQuinox, same generation

This is the decisive comparison. The eQuinox reuses the same Sony Exmor IMX224 sensor and the same optics but drops the eyepiece: observation happens only in the app. In exchange it gains a stiffer double fork, a quoted 12 hours of battery life and a documented 64 GB of storage. If you observe alone, the eQuinox is the rational choice. If you observe with others, the eVscope’s eyepiece justifies the difference.

When a second-hand unit still makes sense

Three conditions, all of them required. First the price: it must sit clearly below that of a second-hand eQuinox, otherwise the eQuinox offers more comfort for less money. Then the use case: the purchase only stands up if the eyepiece is genuinely used, which means shared observing. Finally the condition of the unit: battery tested in front of you, eyepiece screen checked, quiet drives and successful automatic pointing on at least two targets. None of these checks can be replaced by manufacturer documentation, because there is none left.

Alternatives by budget

  • Same generation, no eyepiece: the Unistellar eQuinox, longer-running and better mounted, if solo observing suits you.
  • The real successor: the Unistellar eVscope 2, the only model that keeps the electronic eyepiece and improves it substantially.
  • Very tight budget: the compact entry-level smart telescopes that have appeared since, lighter and better documented, but with no eyepiece at all.
