Urban astrophotography: succeeding despite light pollution

You live in a city and think astrophotography is off-limits? Good news: smart telescopes change everything. Thanks to real-time image processing and built-in filters, they pull out nebulae and galaxies even under skies washed out by urban lights. Here’s how to capture great images from a balcony in London, Paris or New York.

Why the city makes astrophotography harder

Light pollution creates a milky sky background that drowns faint objects. On a classic telescope, the eye sees almost nothing. But a smart telescope stacks hundreds of short exposures and subtracts the parasitic glow: the nebula’s signal emerges, the noise fades. That’s the principle of “live stacking”.

The decisive role of filters

Most recent models (ZWO Seestar, Vaonis Vespera, Unistellar) include a light-pollution filter or a narrowband filter. These block the wavelengths of streetlights (sodium, LED) while letting nebula light through (hydrogen, oxygen). In the city, that’s what separates a failed shot from a spectacular one.

Which objects to target from the city?

Favour bright, high-signal targets: the Orion Nebula (M42), the Lagoon Nebula (M8), the Hercules Cluster (M13), the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), or the Moon and Sun (with a solar filter). Emission nebulae respond very well to narrowband filters, even downtown.

Our practical tips

Move away from direct streetlights and lit windows. Point the telescope at the highest, darkest patch of sky (at the zenith, the atmosphere crossed is thinnest). Increase total exposure: in the city, count on 30 minutes to 1 hour of stacking for a good result, versus 10-15 minutes in the countryside.

Which model for the city?

The Unistellar excels in urban settings thanks to its onboard processing and generous aperture. The ZWO Seestar S50 offers excellent value with its built-in filter. On a tight budget, the Seestar S30 already delivers fine shots from a balcony.
